10 RACES TO TRY IN THE SYRACUSE AREA

4/14/16 9:20 AM

We live in a beautiful area! With all four seasons and plenty of hills, lakes, and foliage, Central New York boasts some of the most scenic races and challenging courses around. Below is a list of some of the local road races to be sure to mark on your training calendar for the upcoming year.

Syracuse Half Marathon (Annual) This Year: 4/2/16

This springtime half marathon course is a great way to kick off prime road racing season and kick your butt into gear after a long winter. This race finishes with a great pancake breakfast and live music downtown in Armory Square.

Good Samaritan Run 5K (Annual) This Year: 4/9/16

Good race for a good cause. Sponsored by Christian Health Services of Syracuse, proceeds from this 5K help provide affordable health care services to those in need within our local community. The course is a certified “out and back” in Longbranch Park with views of Onondaga Lake.

CNY Springtime 10K (Annual) This Year: 4/16/16

As a newer race in the Syracuse area, the Springtime 10K is back for its third year to give athletes a chance to preview the Ironman 70.3 Syracuse course, tune up race for the Mountain Goat run in May, or just as another reason to keep active in the spring!

Dunn Tire Mountain Goat Road Run  (Annual) This Year: 5/1/16

This run may be the most famous run in Syracuse. Serious bragging rights to finishers of this grueling 10 mile loop over the hills surrounding the city.

Boilermaker (Annual) This Year: 7/10/16

This 15K run through Utica is one of the most popular in the area and attracts record amounts of runners. What makes this race especially fun is the incredible crowd support from fans lining the streets to cheer on race participants as well as plenty of live music along the course.  Unlimited Saranac beer for finishers as well as a live concert makes for an eventful post-race party. Registration fills up extremely fast so be sure to sign up as soon as registration opens!

Empire State Marathon (Annual) This Year: 10/9/16

Syracuse’s Marathon consists of an out and back course through Onondaga Lake Park along the Parkway, East and West Shore Trails. Enjoy the fall foliage and scenery as you run along the Lake and take home a participant medal in the shape of a maple leaf. Not feeling up to a full Marathon? Race the Half marathon or create a four person relay team to complete the course.

Resolution Run (Annual) This Year: 1/1/17

What better way to start your resolutions for the new year than with a 5K? Complete with a champagne stop, this race is sure to be a fun way to kick off fitness goals for the new year.

Chilly Chili 5K (Annual) This Year: Jan 2017

Based out of Cazenovia, this race has been one of my personal favorites over the years. After a chilly and hilly 5K course, you have a ticket to a chili cook-off complete with beer from local breweries. Sample lots of great chili recipes from surrounding restaurants and vote for your favorite!

Super Couch Potato 5K (Annual) This Year: Feb 2017

This race is hosted the morning of Super Bowl Sunday. A great way to get out and preemptively burn off all the calories that you will be consuming in appetizers later during the game. Age group prizes this year consisted of large bags of potato chips! Very fitting.

Tipp Hill Shamrock Run (Annual) This Year: March 2017

This race will take you up, down, and around Syracuse’s Irish district on Tipperary Hill. The four mile course showcases many of Tipp Hill's historic landmarks including the world famous "Green-On-Top" traffic light, scenic parks, architecturally striking churches, and of course, popular Pubs. Stop by Coleman’s afterward for a green beer to celebrate your finish.
