Why do I feel Dizzy?

9/29/17 8:00 AM

Have you recently felt dizzy or lightheaded? Felt like the room you are standing in is spinning? You may be suffering from a possible Vestibular Dysfunction.

Dizziness and vertigo symptoms are very common as individuals get older. Finding out where the dizziness and room spinning is coming from is an important factor for treatment.

  • Causes: Concussion, whiplash, trauma, anxiety, aging, medications, and unknown causes at times

  • Symptoms: Vertigo (room spinning), light headed, dizzy, nausea, vomiting, loss of balance, falling, trouble focusing, poor coordination.

  • Possible Diagnosis: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere’s, Vestibular Neuritis, Perilymphatic fistula, Acoustic Neuroma, Vestibular Labyrinthitis.

  • Treatment: Hands-on maneuvers, balance and coordination work, eye and head position exercises, re-training the inner ear/vestibular system.

Why Physical Therapy?

The vestibular system (inner ear) is a very complex system that communicates with the brain and your eyes on where your body is in space. This communication can become disturbed due to something happening in the inner ear; dizziness and vertigo can occur. Your physical therapist can perform certain tests to figure out where the symptoms are coming from. From there, treatment is performed and we can start getting you moving again and performing your daily tasks without complaints of dizziness, loss of balance or room spinning.
